Overview

The command compound

Terra Nova is situated in a large valley, giving it scenic views of surrounding mountains, jungles, and waterfalls. The large circular settlement is surrounded by tall fences encompassing a large agricultural expanse. Six wind turbines are located at the compound's far end. Access is gained through several large gates, one near the command compound and at least two others at the north-east and south. A long path leads from the main gate and into the jungle. The settlement has numerous housing areas including some M-7 model structures and warehouses; there is also a well-equipped medical center. Following the arrival of the Tenth pilgrimage, Terra Nova houses approximately 1,000 colonists. Some dinosaurs, such as Brachiosauri, wander near the settlement to graze. Power

Terra Nova relies on at least three different forms of energy production powering the grid - solar power panels covering various structures around the colony, wind turbines of varying sizes and at least one goethermal well. Residents also rely on internally produced power such as those in Wind Lanterns for lighting their homes. (Genesis, Part 1, Instinct, The Runaway)

Defense

The primary line of defense against outside attack is the large fence with numerous sentry towers armed with sonic cannons to drive away attacking animals. Outside of the settlement there are sonic mines in a perimeter around the colony which ward off dangerous predators. The settlement is protected by security personnel armed with powerful weapons and technology. There are also numerous security cameras watching the settlement. (Genesis, Part 1, Genesis, Part 2)

OTG

Terra Nova has established several outposts, markers and communication relay stations for the purposes of research into biology, botany, paleontology and medicine. There are also some other strucutres and areas outside the gates for varying uses to the colony. (What Remains, Instinct, Now You See Me)

History

The tenth pilgrimage arrives

It is unknown when exactly Terra Nova was established. While digging a geothermal well, colonists came across thousands of egg shells, whose decomposition made the soil very fertile. Over time, the colony grew, and welcomed more pilgrimages over the next seven years. In addition to supplies being shipped in from the future, the natural resources in Terra Nova, such as timber and metal ores, were used to help build and sustain the colony.

The pterosaurs attack

When the sixth pilgrimage arrived, many of its people began acting strange and asked detailed questions about security measures. Taylor and his team discovered a hidden cache belonging to this pilgrimage, but by then they had left, taking supplies, equipment, and ammunition with them, and becoming known as the Sixers. When the tenth pilgrimage arrived, several Brachiosauri strayed near the settlement fence to graze. The following day, two Sixer vehicles were chased by Carnotaurs into Terra Nova, but the Carnotaurs were driven off. (Instinct, Genesis, Part 1, Genesis, Part 2)

An Empirosaur approaches the colony

A few days later, Terra Nova was attacked by thousands of pterosaurs that were returning to their breeding ground after a long absence. As the colonists remained in their shelters, Jim Shannon and commander Taylor used concentrated synthetic pheromones to lure the swarm away from the colony and to a new breeding area. Later the colony became infected with a dangerous pathogen but luckily a cure was found before symptoms started to show. After a young Sixer girl showed up at the colony, the Sixers showed up in force to demand her back but she opted for remaining in Terra Nova, but as a ploy to steal back an item that Mira left in her old house. (Instinct, What Remains, The Runaway)

After Ken Foster was killed and Howard Milner confessed to his murder, Commander Taylor was forced to banish Milner from the colony. Later a meteor exploded in the atmosphere above the colony and caused an electromagnetic pulse, disabling all of the colony's technology. The Sixers took this opportunity to drive an Empirosaur towards the colony as a distraction so they could recover the item that Mira left behind. Some weeks later, the colony celebrated the harvest festival. In an attempt to drive out the Sixer spy, the colony was placed into lockdown. (Bylaw, Nightfall, Vs., Now You See Me)

Notes

  • The settlement area appears to only be 3/4 full. (Genesis, Part 1)
  • Terra Nova is at least ¼ mile in length. (Genesis, Part 1)
  • Terra Nova refers to both the colony (usually mentioned by the colonists) and the Earth 85 million years ago (usually by those in 2149).
