Biography
Early life
Jim was a Chicago Police Officer, working in the narcotics department. He and his wife, Elisabeth, had a third child, even though couples were limited to two children. Zoe was kept hidden, but when she was three-years-old, Population Control raided the Shannon home and found her. Jim assaulted one officer when he tried to take Zoe. Jim was arrested and sentenced to six years in Golad prison. (Genesis, Part 1)
Tenth pilgrimage
In 2149, Elisabeth bribed her way into Golad prison, informing Jim that she and their two oldest children were being allowed to immigrate to Terra Nova. She gave Jim a laser cutter with which to escape. Jim made his way to Hope Plaza after picking up a backpack containing money to pay off one of the personnel who smuggled in another pack containing Zoe. Jim, carrying Zoe, joined the tenth pilgrimage, but he was spotted leaving a secure area and detained by security. Jim had quickly switched backpacks with Elisabeth, and once the family was safely through the time portal, Jim escaped the guards and sprinted through.
Found armed with a gun on the other side, Jim was apprehended and Zoe was discovered. In Terra Nova, Jim was interviewed by Commander Nathaniel Taylor who, sympathetic to the family's plight, placed Jim on agricultural detail rather than in jail or banish him to the jungle. While working, Jim noticed a suspicious character and tackled him as he drew a weapon in an attempt to assassinate Taylor. Following that incident, Taylor offered Jim a position on his security team. Taylor also tells him about the Sixers, an enemy group living outside Terra Nova.
Jim helped Taylor run down two Sixer vehicles headed to the settlement that were being chased by two Carnotaurs. Later, when Jim discovered that his son, Josh, had snuck outside the fence with some new friends, he joined the rescue mission to locate them. Finding the teens under attack by Slashers, Jim shot one that was about to kill Josh. These events partially help reconcile Jim with Josh, who blamed his father's actions for getting himself sentenced to Golad prison. (Genesis, Part 1, Genesis, Part 2)
Jim, Taylor, and a search team located a missing supply-run team, finding them dead. That night, Jim and Josh were attacked by pterosaurs, and Jim deduced they were what killed the others. Jim helped capture two specimens, bringing them back for Elisabeth and Dr. Malcolm Wallace to study. Later, Jim and Taylor used synthesized pheromones to lure the pterosaurs away from Terra Nova to a new breeding ground. Afterwards, Jim and Elisabeth were intimate for the first time since Jim escaped prison. (Instinct)
When Elisabeth was at Outpost 3, Jim and Malcolm went to investigate after communication was suddenly lost. Elisabeth, infected with a pathogen, had no memory of Jim. Malcolm suggested that Jim say nothing to Elisabeth about them being married to avoid confusing her. Jim was threatened by Taylor, who was also infected and had lost his more recent memories. Elisabeth, realizing that Jim had not become infected because he had a common cold, was able to discover a cure. (What Remains)
When a young Sixer girl, Leah Marcos, came to Terra Nova she stayed with the Shannon's. Jim uncovered that she had been sent to the colony to retrieve an item and headed off to stop her from leaving Terra Nova. When leah revealed that Mira had Leah's brother, Sam, Jim went outside the gates to locate him, being captured by the Sixers and brought before Mira, who told Jim she was doing what she was doing because someone in the future could help her daughter. Jim then brought Sam back to the colony to live with his sister. (The Runaway)
After Ken Foster was discovered to have been murdered, Jim began an investigation leading him to Howard Milner who admitted to killing Foster and was banished. Jim had suspicions about whether Howard had killed Foster and so went outside the gates and brought him back. Jim helped lead a search of Boylan's bar for the ledger with Foster's gambling debts to help track down the real murderer and he and Commander Taylor faced the murderer. (Bylaw)
Jim took Zoe to The Eye as a surprise and the two became trapped within after an electromagnetic pulse killed the power, Jim was forced to open up the access hatch and let Zoe crawl through and open the door for him. He then helped Commander Taylor fend off an attacking Empirosaur and the two men went to find the Sixers who infiltrated the colony and ended up in a fight with them. Jim went fishing with Commander Taylor and was almost pulled into the ocean by a large Prehistoric Swordfish, later he had to rescue Maddy after she had uncovered that Ken Horton was not who he said he was. (Nightfall, Proof)
When Boylan told Jim about a body buried near Pilgrim's tree he went out and dug it up, following what clues he had, Jim discovered the body to be General Richard Philbrick, Commander Taylor's old mentor. Worried about being found out Taylor had Jim framed for being the Sixer spy and arrested. Taylor eventually told Jim why he had killed Philbrick in order to protect Terra Nova and let him go. When Taylor went OTG, Jim took command of the colony and began to track down the Sixer spy finding a drop of blood which led him to create a short suspects list. (Vs., Now You See Me)
